The mental health needs of UK schoolteachers; leadership, policy, pathways and support
Funded by the National Association of Schoolmasters and Union of Women Teachers. In this qualitative study we will examine the experiences of teachers who have developed stress-related mental health problems, examining barriers to care. We will also interview school principals and investigate policy issues related to the mental health needs of staff. The study will be undertaken primarily in Northern Ireland but with the participation of schools in England (Gerard Leavey, Prof. K. Loewenthal (Royal Holloway, UoL) & Dr. Despina Rothi) £50,000.

Mental Health Promotion Strategic Review for Chief Medical Officer for NI
(Prof Alan Ferguson, Dr Gerry Leavey, Dr Karen Galway, Ms Janeet Rondon, Mr Graham Logan) Commissioned by the DHSSPS to carry out a review of the strategy for mental health promotion and to advise on the development of a new mental health and wellbeing strategy for Northern Ireland. The review process involved; (1) examining international and national policy documents and research evidence; (2) consultation with key stakeholders involved in commissioning, delivering or benefiting from the three existing strategies across NI; (3) consultation with a panel of international experts. The final report, A Flourishing Society – Aspirations for Emotional Health and Wellbeing in Northern Ireland, is now available.

Needs assessment of clergy in dealing with suicide in Northern Ireland
This study has been funded by the Southern Area Health and Social Services Board (£20,000). Using survey and qualitative methods we are currently examining the needs of clergy as they attempt to deal with the deeply sensitive issue of providing pastoral care to families, friends and the community. How do they cope? Should they receive training in mental health care? How should they collaborate with statutory services? (Gerard Leavey, Peter McBride, Janeet Rondon, Katy Radford & Margaret Fawcett). The final report, Dealing with Suicide; the needs of Clergy in providing pastoral care is now available.
